...a place with little else but abundant wind and waves, which immediately captured his interest. Several months later, he left everything behind in France and settled permanently in Cabo Verde. Initially establishing the center on Sal Island, his ambition was to introduce Cabo Verdeans to what he saw as a valuable resource and to showcase Cabo Verde's wind and waves to the world. He promoted Cabo Verde to the global windsurfing elite, attracting top champions and tourists to explore this hidden gem. In 1989, François arrived in Boavista after an epic windsurfing journey from Sal, without assistance. The warm welcome from locals and the exceptional conditions of the bay of Sal Rei for water sports, sheltered by the islet of Sal Rei, convinced him that he had discovered his paradise to build his dream windsurfing center. Relocating once more, he established the first windsurfing center in Boavista—a modest structure of palm leaves, yet a significant development in the island's nascent tourism sector. His vision was grand: to elevate Sal Rei Bay into one of the world's premier windsurfing destinations.
In 1995, François Guy teamed up with new partners to establish The Boa Vista Wind Club. They built a new center with proper infrastructure, welcoming enthusiasts from around the world to experience the exceptional conditions of Sal Rei Bay firsthand.
He was driven by the ambition to introduce an activity that would provide local youth with opportunities for employment and engagement. François Guy tirelessly shared his passion with them, forming a club team primarily composed of locals. They developed a learning method accessible to all ages. He took great pride in contributing to the rise of young Cabo Verdean competitors who achieved global recognition.
From his captain's cabin atop the tower, between chess games, François Guy oversaw the club's activities until 2012. His untimely passing left a void, but he ensured that his children and the youth of Boa Vista inherited his passion for sharing the waves and wind of Boa Vista with visitors like you.
At the Wind Club François Guy, which evolved in 2020, Sean Guy and his family proudly continue the legacy, embodying the true spirit of the place. They share the passion and knowledge of ocean and watersports. The team is dedicated to ensuring you have an exceptional experience both in and out of the water at this remarkable location. It's more than just a watersports center; it's a relaxed haven where you can meet great people, play chess, enjoy a refreshing caipirinha, and marvel at stunning sunsets.
